Jesse Tubbs SOCI 2F60 ourse Portfolio

Introduction

My name is Jesse Tubbs I am a National Level Men’s Physique competitor from Ontario, Mississauga. I am 20 years old and I go to Brock University, where I study criminology and sociology as a double major. I took this course because of the convenient schedule the course had, also I enjoy helping community based groups and being involved with activism. Throughout my life, I have played competitive sports starting with soccer and then excelling in basketball.  At the age of 16 I started my journey on a strength and muscle building program with my brother, Joseph Tubbs, and I made amazing progress in one summer, going from 160 pounds to 175 pounds of mostly pure muscle. As I played basketball, my love for working out continued to grow and I would work out before practices, after practices, and any chance I could get to work out because I loved it. I dedicated all of my time to becoming the best and I eventually made it to doing 1,000 pushups a day. As the years went on I stayed consistent with my working out until the love of working out and building my physique overtook my passion for basketball. I will have a career in the fitness industry, competing in shows, guest posing and hosting and doing fitness expos. The portfolio is based on recreation and leisure, secondly health promotion.

Brock Community Leadership OOCLO

The event that I experienced, this Friday September 26, was being an official in the organization of intermural basketball at Brock. The specific role that I had was refereeing the basketball game and I refereed for two hours that day. My contribution was essential for the game to take place because no game will be official without a referee. The community need is Brock students participating in a social club that produces virtuous characteristics such as team work, responsibility, and strong peer relationships. Sports often separates genders in regards that boys will often play together and girls will play together. However, co- ed sports help break gender roles in terms of each member is equally part of the team, regardless of their gender.

This helps build the community by joining genders together as equals and eliminating power imbalances among sexes. Coed basketball uses sports to try ending gender inequalities, according to C Van Tuyckomto achieve more female participation in sports will require different policy” (Tuyckom, 2010). The teams having mixed genders incorporates each team player to consult with each other in ways of time outs, thinking of strategies to win, and working together to operate their strategies and try to win. This will restrict power imbalances between men and women because each gender has an equal input and say for the greater cause of the team. This re-socializes the community because it no longer suggests that men have a greater power or say than women do in decision making. Through discourse ideologies, patriarchal control is usually the social norm and is socially constructed through history. In the game, each member attained different abilities and skill levels that in which created stratification within the team. Some players were more essential to the team in terms of winning than others. Male players tended to be better and played an essential part in terms of scoring. For the most part,

Tubbs 3

males overcompensated not to be gender bias and try to show any power imbalances between genders. However, not everything can be perfect, and I observed one male not taking into consideration the ideas of the other team mates. This individual was also overly aggressive, angry and used foul language towards my partner referee, which was a female. A great way to further better the equality between the genders is to have co captains of both genders. This will give power to each gender and eliminate power imbalances between genders. My social position for this event was an authority figure, since my decisions were final. This made the players respect me and want to be on my good side to get calls in their favor. The expectation I had previous to refereeing the game was that the two genders will not cooperate well. From my past experience of being a basketball player, when I played basketball at the YMCA, men did not want to play with females. A past situation I had was that one individual a male passionately did not want to play if a girl was playing with us. However, my expectations were wrong and cooperation between the genders went well and there were no arguments or problems with the two genders having to play together.

From this experience I learnt that socialization agent clubs and social groups is a great way for the students in the Brock community to interact and create new social groups. The basketball teams play different teams each week and this allows for opportunities to make new peers and create new networks with people one may never have beforehand. This opportunity allows me to see each gender work homogenously and fairly, and it helps break barriers of gender roles because in this environment each gender is seen as an equal. This OOCLO widens my perspective in terms of co-ed sports helping to break barriers that our society has from social norms, and co-ed sports help move in the right directions for equality of women, and women’s

Tubbs 4

rights. There is currently a campaign called He for She, which emphasizes the fact that men must be on board for equality of women or no dramatic change can occur. My point of view is that if at a young age co-ed sports is encouraged, both genders will be seen as equals and it will defer stratification between men and women. Lastly, I am glad I had this experience to help better the community that I am a part of and better the school community.

Breast Cancer Awareness OOCLO Reflection

On October 5 2014 I participated in the run for breast cancer, breast cancer awareness month is October. Many organizations and companies will be donating and raising money for the research to end breast cancer. The run took place Sunday morning, where my friends and I ran 5 kilometers. There were a large amount of people that participated in the event to build awareness and raise money for breast cancer. There was 906 participants and 74 teams and over 137,000 dollars was raised for breast cancer research. The identified issue is to build awareness of the second leading cause of death for Canadian women. According to Phaedra C. Pezzullo, “since 1984, October has been recognized in the U.S. as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In 1997, the Toxic Links Coalition of the Bay Area, California, began organizing annual “Stop Cancer Where It Starts” tours to counter attempts to obscure the environmentally-linked causes of cancer” (Pezzullo, 2003). Breast cancer is a disease of the breast that affects both men and women. The goal of the run was to raise as much money to find a cure and improve research to increase the survival rate. This contributes to building the community because brock students and people in the St. Catherine’s and Niagara region all on one day participate in one common goal

Tubbs 5

and is a factor that strengthens the community because there is a common need. One of the functions of community is social participation and mutual support. Everybody shares the same objective and most have a personal relation to someone with cancer. My friends all knew one friend or family member that suffered from breast cancer. Even if one has no personal relation to a person with breast cancer they learn a lot from the run alone. Some people do it for a challenge such as one brock student doing the run I talked to, however money is still raised by everyone and they are now aware of the predicament. The population that is of concern is all people of the world because anyone can develop breast cancer, however specifically focuses on people with breast cancer. Breast cancer is most common in women, so the main population that the run focuses on is women. The importance of community is physical and mental health benefits. The run focuses on physical health. There were many roles that one can assume in the breast cancer run, such as volunteering and participating in the run. The role I had was participating in the run and donating money.

I believe the run is very effective way to build awareness and builds the community because everyone is allowed to participate and it is a well-known event around the community and is an anticipated event by members of the community. The event allows for people to know the strength they have to make a change in the lives of people they know and complete strangers that have breast cancer. It is a simply way to help and people acknowledge the fact that the small role they play contributes to a larger goal. There were no power relations visible during the event and was a community bonding moment and everyone was seen as equals, helping to raise money and awareness for cancer research. Since the entire month of October is dedicated to breast

Tubbs 6

cancer awareness, one can continue to contribute and donate towards the cause. The follow up can be done all the way up to October 31st.

I was situated as an insider in the event of the run, every race, gender is welcome and appreciated because we were all there for the same reason. The interactions I had with people involved was other participants telling their stories of their association with breast cancer or other forms of cancer. My friend from first year mother is fight the battle against breast cancer and we all supported him and we spoke about that during the run. The expectations I had about the run was to donate and accomplish the set destination, however it was so much more because all the personal stories shared. A great bond was created between the people I ran with and also some strangers.

I have a strong connection to building awareness for breast cancer and raising money. I have a good friend from Mississauga that is battling against breast cancer. I personal since the ending of august has been donating to breast cancer research and been doing symbolic ways to help. Such as pink water bottles, pink head phones and breast cancer sign hanging from my gym bag and on the walls in my room.

Presentation Showcase Interviews

Enactus

Enactus is a national organization that has over 60 divisions across Canada, one of which is located at Brock University as a B.U.S.U. business club. The organization is comprised of entrepreneurial and socially conscious leaders and students who want to challenge the social norms in order to improve them for the greater good. The name Enactus comes from the three main words that the organization revolves around: entrepreneurial, action, and us. Hence, the organization’s goal is to give students the ability to recognize opportunities, create value with those opportunities, and the motivation to act on those opportunities, all while being a part of a meaningful team that shares the same vision. Furthermore, Enactus enables students to make a difference in their community while gaining experience and skills that can develop their careers. Enactus Brock mostly relies on self-funding through fundraising to obtain their finances and they receive some funding from B.U.S.U. However, the problem for Enactus Brock is not financing the club, it is that they do not have enough awareness in the Brock student community and it is hard for them to interest the limited students who are aware of the organization because many students are already too busy with their studies.

In my opinion, I believe that the group successfully analyzed the organization, Enactus. Firstly, they clearly described what the organization was and their primary

objectives, which was important because I was not aware of the organization at all beforehand. Secondly, the group informed me of both the advantages of Enactus to students and their

Tubbs 8

limitations. The group’s comprehensive two-sided evaluation of the organization illustrated their ability to analyze Enactus from a third party’s perspective, which I believe is important when analyzing something. Lastly, the group provided details about the organization’s logistics, including their finances and their organizational structure. This shows that the group really looked fully into the organization itself, including its business operations. The only criticism I have for the group is that I would have liked to learn more about some of the specific opportunities that Enactus provides you with, such as Enactus Week and the expositions.

After learning about Enactus, I would definitely become a member of the organization because the organization seems like a good platform to become an entrepreneur that actually makes a difference in the world. Enactus provides you with the resources, including mentors and events, which allow you to build the skills and knowledge necessary to becoming a socially responsible entrepreneur. This would be extremely useful for me because I am an aspiring entrepreneur, however, as a sociology student I do not have the best knowledge or connections in the business field. Therefore, Enactus could really give me a strong foundation on how to be a successful entrepreneur.

Jumpstart

The Canadian Tire Jumpstart program was established in 2005 in order to help less fortunate children who cannot normally afford to take part in sports teams due to registration, membership, equipment, and transportation costs. The organization tries to promote children from the ages of 4-18 to be physically active by funding a maximum of $300 for one activity per child. Jumpstart

Tubbs 9

chooses its children that will receive funding based primarily on the family’s income; their income must be below Canada’s low-income cut-off. The organization is funded by donations, mainly through organizations such as Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, and National Sports. However, Jumpstart also has numerous corporate sponsors, with Coca-Cola, MasterCard, and BMO just being a few.

I think that the group did a fairly well job at analyzing Jumpstart. They effectively outlined the purpose of the organization and included some of the key components of the program, such as the determining factors of selecting applicants, the organization’s budget per applicant, and how the organization receives its finances. Moreover, the group provided multiple examples of how Jumpstart obtains finances through catchy advertisements, which was a more interesting way to learn about the organization. However, the group did not analyze the organization’s limitations in depth or their organizational structure, which is important for a potential volunteer like myself to know.

Overall, I would still be enthusiastic to become a volunteer for the Jumpstart program after this group’s presentation. They excellently highlighted the organization’s value in today’s society where too many children are unhealthy and inactive. As a men’s physique competitor that loves fitness and health, I strongly agree with Jumpstart’s mission and I would definitely volunteer or donate in order to give children the same opportunities that I had as a child because it has changed my entire life. I also believe that my expertise knowledge in this area would make me a great volunteer and would help me to contribute something of value to my community.

Tubbs 10

Conclusion

The two quality that I cultivated the most in my experiences doing OOCLO’s is awareness and comprehension. My first personal quality I will like to explain is awareness, by doing multiple out of class room opportunities such as the breast cancer awareness run, I became aware of the different health concerns in our community St. Catharine’s. Also by doing a specific event, there is other concern or issue one can be aware of because of advertisement. For example the breast cancer run also had advertisements on prostate cancer and other medical issues I was not aware of such as special heart conditions. The second personal quality is comprehension, by adventuring off and learning about community based organizations on different issues such as activism and for example mental health. I was given the opportunity to understand an important health condition; such as mental illness in depth and learn important and interesting facts on the health concern. For example I learned about the organization CHMA which stands for Canadian Mental Health Association, which is a St. Catharine’s designated building that provides temporary shelter and psychological support to people dealing with mental health problems. I was able to better understand the perspectives of both the patients and the counselors in the organization.

Social media is a modern advance tool used for communication between individuals and is extremely popular and regularly used in our western culture. Social media such as Facebook and Twitter has swept the globe and is used by all huge corporation as means of personal interaction, promotion of product/ service, and advertisement. With social media being as popular as it is, activist groups can use social media platforms such as twitter and Facebook to share their

Tubbs 11

mission statement and their vision to the mass population that uses social media like twitter and Facebook. In my own personal experience Instagram created a platform for me to advertise my Brand Tubbs Aesthetics, and teach people fitness tips and healthy food choices, as they are learning from me: the best Men’s Physique athlete in the province Ontario.

With all the knowledge I accumulated from doing OOCLO experiences and related activities associated with the 2F60 course. I feel I can take this knowledge of helping people and help people in my own community at Brock, by providing an outlet for Brock students to share any discomforts they have with their Brock experiences and any problems they’re dealing with in their personal life. Through email, Facebook, twitter and texting or phone call.

Weekly Report & Reflection #12

Hi everyone,

So this is finally the last week of school, except for exams of course, and I am so happy summer is almost here! Over the course of the term I learned so much in ADED about the digital world and now my brain needs a break.

The most beneficial aspect of ADED, in my opinion, was all of the useful tools that we were forced to utilize because it made me experiment with tools that I would have never tried before, and a lot of them actually turned out to be pretty neat. My PLE definitely grew over the duration of the class, and I will continue to use some of the tools I learned about, like Evernote.

The most important part of the class, I think, was learning about what makes a good and responsible digital citizen. ADED made me consider so many different things about the digital world that I had never thought of before. Even if they were simple things, such as trying to find photos that were eligible to be changed or copied. I believe that the most crucial thing that I learned, however, was when we did the mind map on digital rights and responsibilities. This activity really opened my eyes to the fact that the digital world has the same "code of conduct" or "laws" that the real world has and that people should be treated the same in both places. This is the part of the class that I will try to teach to others and try my hardest to abide by on all forms of social media that I use on a regular basis. I think that the easiest platform to get across lessons like this is on Twitter because Twitter has an easy potential to be used for more harm than good in today's society, and therefore, it would be really helpful for a good example, such as myself, to show good digital responsibilities.

Enjoy your summer,

Jesse

Week #11

Hi everyone,

This week is our final blog post and I can't believe how fast the term went by. We had to explore a webcasting tool this week for ADED, and I chose Garageband since I have a Mac. I have used Garageband previously for school projects and I found that it was a great tool for both school and recreation! Garageband is easy enough to use if you are trying to create a simple but good video, and it also allows you to do much more complex stuff if you want. Even though I had used Garageband before, I had never made a podcast. Actually, I didn't even really know what a podcast was until this week! Creating a podcast through a webcasting tool, such as Garageband, is a great way to share information in the digital world. Podcasts are more complex and interesting sources of information that can include videos, voice clips, images etcetera all in one source. With children and learning becoming more and more involved and evolved in the technology world, learning is no longer associated with being boring and involving a ton of reading and textbooks. Instead, resources like podcasts are becoming extremely popular. Therefore, being able to create and find podcasts really enhances your ability in the digital world, and can contribute greatly to your learning.

Webcasting tools obviously differ drastically from the traditional learning tools, such as books, but they also differ from the other tools that we've learned about in ADED this term. Many of the tools we have learned about can be very impersonal, and you really have no idea who you are learning from or who is learning from you! The Internet allows everyone to be hidden behind a computer screen and remain anonymous basically. Once something is put up on the Internet it gets thrown into an enormous database with everything else and it all just becomes a blur of information to the users. However, podcasts or other resources created through Garageband, for example, allow the creator to show themselves and make it more personal. Podcasts create a more real life and traditional learning environment compared to blogs or wikis, while still utilizing the digital world. I personally really like this about webcasting tools compared to the other tools, hence, I would definitely add it to my PLE.

As I mentioned, Garageband is great for both learning and recreation purposes, and can even mix both of them! An article I found on Feedly this week discussed some of the best apps for children, which I thought was interesting because children are being exposed to technology and the digital world at a much younger age now and there are so many apps that are being developed specially for them. One of the apps mentioned in the article was Garageband, due to its musical aspects, which goes to show the many uses of Garageband.

Weekly Report #10

Hi everyone,

This week for ADED 1P32 we had to learn how to use a slideshow tool to increase our digital literacy. I chose to explore the tool Animoto in order to create my slideshow about copyrights. Animoto had a lot of different styles that you could choose from and I really liked this about Animoto because it allowed me to choose a style that really suited the topic of my presentation. Once I began to create my slideshow I found it easy to add my pictures and choose music for my slideshow. However, when I started to add text to my presentation I found that Animoto did not provide me with a lot of space to explain my pictures and to source them correctly. As a result, Animoto made it hard for me to be a good digital citizen, which was the whole purpose of my slideshow!! I also did not like how hard it was for me to try and share my video once it was done. I believe that many of the poor aspects of Animoto may be improved with the full version because I only got to try the trial version. I must say that Animoto wasn't one of my favourite tools that I have discovered through the class, and I would not add it to my PLE.

Retrieved from: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-JQs23wY5AEE/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAHA/s9L9cjyBzRA/photo.jpg

Creating a slideshow about copyrights really helped me learn about copyrights though. Learning how to use the advanced search on Google Images will really assist me in the future when I want to specify my search for material that I can edit or even just search for a certain image size etcetera. It also made me think about how easy it is to infringe on copyright rights without even noticing. With the amount of work we do using the Internet and making presentations with pictures and so on the normal student will   copy and paste pictures from the Internet into their work within seconds and not think twice. However, this week I realized that anytime that I use a picture that is not mine I need to source it very clearly under the picture. This may not seem ideal or easy, but it is what is expected from a good digital citizen.

To reinforce the importance of digital literacy, this week from my Feedly I read an article on digital strategies used for the 2016 presidential campaign:

Digital Strategies Fuel 2016 Campaign Launch Decisions

It was an interesting article that highlighted how influential and useful digital tools, just like the ones we learn about in class, can be! Sometimes it feels like the skills you learn in school can't be applied to the real world, but this article goes to show that the digital literacy we acquire in ADED 1P32 can actually be dry useful in a very professional setting.

Until next week,

Jesse

My Slideshow

Animoto:

This week I had to learn how to use the tool Animoto to create a slideshow about copyrights. Animoto is a good tool that allows you to create interesting slideshows that include music, videos, and pictures easily. Animoto is another tool that enhances my digital literacy, which improves the quality of my work. However, I found it hard to cite the images that I used in my slideshow because Animoto only allows you to have a limited number of characters in the caption space provided. Consequently, I would not say that Animoto is one of my favourite tools because it makes it difficult to be a good digital citizen  and be digitally responsible. Moreover, to access all of Animoto's features, you must pay.

Here is my slideshow:

My slideshow explains what a copyright is (a creator's exclusive legal right to their creative work that is enforced by the law), and the most common excuses for infringing copyrights. The purpose of my slideshow is to inform my audience on the basic principles of copyrights and the consequences of breaking the law.

Weekly Report & Reflection Post #9

This week we added another usesful tool, VoiceThread is an apparatus where one can create a slide show. The interesting part is that other people such as friend, classmates can comment on the slide how in many options such as voice sounded comments or an usual written comment. This can enhance ones slideshow because constructive criticism, tips or compliments on the slideshow can be made in present tense to the creator of the slideshow. This tool can be very much useful in a classroom such as seminar when one is presenting. For example an individual can be presenting and classmates can comment upon the presentation, this is really useful for individuals that may be shy to speak in class.

I first used polldaddy to answer one of the question in our weekly task. After experiencing PollDaddy one is able to post their survey question and have it answered. This tool was used in my first year biology class, the prof will post a question online and the class will enter their answer using there phone or laptop. This was done at the beginning of the class and really intrigued the attention of us students.

I can add PollDaddy and VoiceThread to my personal learning experience when I am doing my next seminar presentation. I will purpose question through PollDaddy. This can create a positive personal learning network, by having a inclusive environment this will give everybody the opportunity to participate. With VoiceThread classmates will be able to ask questions on the material I'm presenting.

This tool differs from tools such as Blogger, Pintrest and Evernote because the other tools we used had multiple purpose. Compared to VoiceThread and PollDaddy that specify is answering polls and slideshows.

On my journey of becoming a digital citizen I picked up some quality tips that will morally better my internet interaction. Digital citizen made me well acquainted with digital etiquette, the responsibility and respect that acts as a code of conduct over the internet. Having a ethical guideline to follow provides regulation of the internet, creating a safer and better world wide web.

I wrote an essay this weekend on an issue raised by the Supreme Court of Canada declared that the police require warrants to gain information about individuals’ internet activities. This central issue directly relates to the major aspects of every Canadian citizen: their fundamental rights and freedoms according to the Canadian Charter of Rights, and Canada. In the article an outstanding mudslide of the citizens of Canada refused the government having access to personal internet activities. This relates to my Feedly because it made me realize that privacy and security is important and violating it makes people uncomfortable.

Week 8 Reflection

Hi everyone,

This week we added yet another tool to our repertoire: wikis. Wikis are websites that anyone can post and edit on. I think that wikis are very similar to blogs because they provide information that is open to the general public to view, unlike Google Docs and Evernote, which are more private and are shared with selected people. Wikis are also similar to blogs in respect to the ability to comment on the post. Blogs and wikis both encourage discussion on the information being shared in order to acquire different perspectives and opinions. This helps the reader learn even more about the specific topic. In my opinion, the most beneficial thing about wikis is their convenience for conducting research. I have never had trouble finding a wiki about a topic that I am studying! However, I am sure most of you are aware of the dangers of wikis. Since wikis can be edited by anyone, there is no verification that the information you are receiving is correct. As a result, you should always try to find other sources to support the information you find on wikis! Even though I have always been told to be cautious about wikis, I have found that Wikipedia tends to be very good at monitoring the accuracy of the information that is shared on their website. You can never be too safe though!

This week, we also learned about the importance of rights and responsibilities to digital citizens. The legitimacy of wikis would be greatly improved if everyone obeyed good digital citizen rights and responsibilities! Sadly, this is not the case and people abuse the digital world every day. Here are the three most important rights and responsibilities, in my opinion, that would drastically change the Internet if everyone followed:

1) The right to posses you own material
2) The right to freedom of speech
3) The right to feel safe.

I also got to learn how to use Bubbl.us this week to brainstorm rights and responsibilities. I really enjoyed this part of the learning activities! This is what I came up with:

To learn more about wikis this week, I followed the Wikipedia Featured Articles Feed on Feedly. The featured article for March 8, 2015 was Lost Luggage (Video Game).

The article gives an overview of the game, the development of the game, and information about the release and reception of the game. It was an article that I would have never found without my Feedly, which goes to show how useful Feedly can be! It also shows how there is a wiki page on almost everything. Overall, I enjoyed exploring the Wikipedia Featured Articles Feed and finding random wiki pages, such as Lost Luggage, that I would have never learned about on my own.

Week 7

Hello fellow bloggers!

I hope you all had a good break. Over my reading week, I spent a lot of my time utilizing my new Evernote account. After using it for researching digital literacy for ADED and realizing just how useful it was, I decided to use it for personal research too. I created a new notebook all about health and fitness:

I had so much fun learning about a topic that interests me and being able to use Evernote to organize my research for future use! I plan to continue my research and continuously expand on my notebook.

This week, however, I got to explore Google Docs for ADED. Yet again. ADED has introduced me to another tool that is extremely useful to a student like myself. Google Docs is very similar to the well-known Microsoft applications (that I had to pay for unfortunately) but it's free! The tool allows you to upload and store your documents to your account and then you can access them from anywhere. This means that I no longer have to always remember to bring a USB to school or email files that I will need for class etc. I will admit that this will probably help me a lot in the future! Google Docs is also very convenient because everything can be done within the one tool. For example, you can share your work on Google Docs, and therefore, you no longer need to open your email as well as all of your other applications. This is great for group work because constant emails back and forth between multiple people gets very hectic and confusing, especially when people reply to the sender only and not the entire group. Google Docs is also good for group work because everyone can view, edit, and comment on the document at the same time, and see the updates almost immediately. It makes working together via technology so much easier.

As per usual, the first thing I do when I have to learn about a new tool is search it on my Feedly! This week when I searched Google Docs on Feedly I found out that Google Docs has their own blog. I chose to read an article on their blog about their Google Docs app for phones:

Mobile Apps

From :http://googledocs.blogspot.ca/2015/01/updated-mobile-apps.html

The article explains some of the apps new features, and personally, I found the editing feature the most useful. When I realized that I could now access Google Docs on my phone, it became an even better tool! Now, I can access my work on-the-go, anywhere and at any time! Even though doing work on a phone may not seem the most practical or easiest, it is great in case of emergencies and very urgent matters when I may not have access to a computer.

I will definitely be adding Google Docs to my PLE because I can see it being of great use for my future school work, especially in respects to group work. Each week, I have been adding these tools to my PLE and I don't believe that I need to remove any. I enjoy allowing my PLE to continuously grow as I am educated on these new tools. They are all different and they all have their advantages, so why not embrace them all?!

I can't wait to see what I can add to my PLE next week.

All the best,

Jesse

Weekly Report and Reflection #6

Greetings everyone,

I am please to know that my blogs are viewed and read by my fellow classmates and others, the increase in blog views each week motivates me to put out quality information we all can relate to. This weeks assignment introduced a new tool to improve my educational activities, EVERNOTE is essentially an online notebook that allows one to  add, organize, and store information such as websites, pictures, and videos. With Evernote you can organize information in multiple notes giving the user the opportunity to have different notebooks with different sources of information. Evernote is also useful because the user can create a to do list, this is beneficial at an academic standpoint because it keeps the user informed and up to date with current due dates, assignment and more.

Having information on a given topic and having a valid and reliable bookmark for example my topic on digital literacy allows me to store important information that I will need to accomplish my task and use it at a later date. Evernote can be an essential tool to my personal learning experience by adding a resourceful device that categorizes information into its own section. Explore a given topic and find plenty of resources and add it to an individual note. This can help in many other classes I am currently in and I can use it as a database to keep notes and important information.
Having more resourceful tools increases my digital literacy by improving my functional skills, so I have thoroughly developed aptitudes online. Secondly it challenges me to think critically and analyze digital content and information. Lastly it helps with my ability to find and select information and I can evaluate whether the information is quality or not. An article on my Feedly provided me with three useful tips, first tip is to capture each note in steps this means if an idea was to pop in your head and you want to remember it create a new note and add it to your Evernote. Tip two is organize work in notebook this is done by placing all relevant work into one notebook, the benefits is that all your work is in one place and you are not in a disarray to find your information. Last tip is connect with work chat this is an online tool that allows you to share your information with a team of people and provides a setting of collaboration.

Weekly Report & Reflection #5

Hello readers!

This week the goal of my ADED class was to explore the social media site Twitter. The majority of teens today would recognize Twitter's iconic little blue bird as Twitter is one of the most popular social media sites, along with Facebook and Instagram. Many teens have or have had Twitter at some point, including myself, as it was a social trend that definitely swept across North America. However, in the teen world Twitter is mainly used for meaningless entertainment and a lot of people see the site as "stupid" or "a waste of time". While exploring Twitter this week, I was able to see how much more Twitter can offer than what I had previously thought.

Previously, like many other teen's twitter accounts, my twitter had no purpose. I mostly followed friends who would post when they were bored and I would only go on Twitter after I had exhausted all of my other social media sites and I had nothing better to do. After seeing how Twitter can be used as more of a professional and formal learning environment, I "relaunched" my Twitter account so that I could really benefit from what Twitter can do for me! To help me do this, I used my super helpful tool Feedly to search articles that were about Twitter and I came across a great one that really assisted my relaunch:

Firstly, the article made me think about what I really wanted to get out of Twitter. I came up with a few of my own personal Twitter goals to help get me started:

1) I want my Twitter to share my knowledge and personal insight to others in a respectful manner
2) I want to be able to consider the different views that my new friends are sharing with an open mind
3) I want to interact with my classmates
4) I want to find people around the world with similar interests to me (global communication is so exciting!)

After I had established my goals I was able to easily think of what I should put in my bio to help me achieve them. The article advised me to make my bio very strong and really utilize the limited characters you have. Therefore, I had to briefly but effectively construct an introduction to myself and what my interests are. To help display my personality and interests to others I chose a picture of myself during one of my Men's Physique competitions, since health and fitness is my primary interest. Hopefully, my new Twitter bio will attract followers who also like health and fitness and are interested in what I have to share.

Lastly, I tried to build my Twitter audience and engage with my classmates that I thought I may work well with. Twitter's famous hashtag made this very easy because I could see who else was using my classes hashtag  and then explore their page! The DM feature of Twitter then made it possible to chat with them and build a better relationship.

Since Twitter is known for being a quick and easy way to share on-the-go, I am confident that with my new Twitter account and my new friendships with my classmates I will learn a lot more about personal learning networks throughout the rest of this class. Twitter is an easy app to use on my phone and now in my spare time I can effortlessly read my classmates short tweets to enhance my own research into PLNs without being overwhelmed with information!

Until next time,

Jesse Tubbs

Weekly Report & Reflection blog post #4

Hey!

Now having being acquainted with Diigo I discovered a new way of saving useful information and viewing at a later date. The benefits with Diigo as a book mark is that I have the ability to access the wanted website at any device of my choice such as my Iphone, my laptop or my friends computers. The tools, tagging and description is helpful because it reminds me briefly before viewing the content of the website what the website is about. I find this website very resourceful and user friendly. These tools will help my education in various ways, one being when I am writing an essay for one of my classes I can bookmark important websites that I want to cite and use information to write my essays. Also I can locate the websites I need from any computer, so if I have to write my essay in the fishbowl at Brock instead of at home on my laptop, I will still be able to find the websites I want with Diigo.

Valid and reliable book marks contribute to my work in building knowledge in quite a few ways. One being that I am able to save creditable websites and view at any giving time. This will help because I can have a large amount of websites on many different topics at my disposal. So if I am able to view such quality websites at any given place.

The curation tool I got accustom with was Google Alert and I find that it was a resourceful tool as well as extremely informative. The tool updates its users with information that is not even circulated in social media, giving its users new updated information before it is even released to the general public. These tools can enhance my personal learning environment with added new information in various categories such as news, sports, science, health just naming a few. I feel it is important to be knowledgeable any much more than what we study in school for our majors and in week two it challenged us to think about what we want to do in 5 to 10 years. Having a wide spectrum of knowledge will help make that choice easier because it will allow us to know what we like and dislike.

I am broadening my digital literacy, since the beginning of the class I been learning so many new and interesting things that the internet has to offer. This class has been helping my digital skills in learning how specific sites operate and revealing sites that are abundant in knowledge. Being able to connect knowledge from my Google feeder to my learning is beneficial because I am learning things that I may of never came across. Or as I mentioned in my forum events that I may have missed for example the Super bowl, I am caught up with.

Week 3

This week we had to learn about the live blog feeder called Feedly. In today's society that is so technologically savvy, a creation such as Feedly is very useful and popular, especially amongst the younger generation. Businesses and individuals are always trying to stay up to date on the most recent social networks since it is the easiest way to get your product, opinion etc. out in the public to be seen by many. Feedly offers a creative way for people to get their message out, therefore, there is always new blogs and articles being posted for readers to explore on Feedly.

This is great for the majority of us because many of us are very busy all the time trying to juggle school, work and any other extra activities that we do. Feedly constantly updates its live feed with new articles so that it is easy for the reader to find information that they are interested about. The information is so easy to find too since Feedly lets you customize your profile and put your feeds into categories. Being able to search key words and trending topics also allows you to explore Feedly with ease and find the topics that you personally are interested in reading about. You can then choose to share articles you like on other social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook. This allows information to travel very far very fast, which is a good way to share knowledge that may help others too.

Feedly also allows you to notice the importance of digital responsibility. Feedly makes it evident how far and fast information you put on the internet can go, and therefore, you should always post responsibly. Furthermore, Feedly allows you to recognize that everyone's blog etc. is their own personal digital footprint and that they have the right to make it special and not have it copied.

After exploring Feedly a little more I came across this article that interested me personally:

Body building Meals in 5 minutes

Living a healthy lifestyle has its challenges, and eating healthy may be hard in such a busy life we all live. I came across an article explaining how to make nutritious and healthy meals in only 5 minutes. Eating healthy has many positive affects on the body, such as cardiovascular health, cognitive tissue repair and helps fight against illness such as cancer and diabetes. Unfortunately, with so many things going on in ones life such as school, work and social life, many fail to prepare meals. The article explains how to cook well rounded meals including all three macro-nutrients (protein, carbohydrates and fats) in 5 minutes. This is very useful article because it allows for us busy people to be able to eat healthy and improve are health and longevity.

The article is very helpful in my life because I am a full time student, work part time and a National level Men's Physique body builder. The lifestyle I live being a Men's Physique competitor at the national level, it is essential for me to eat healthy. Being able to prepare healthy meals that contribute to my lifestyle and fit into my diet in only 5 minutes is very beneficial and time saving. Now that I have a number of meals that only take 5 minutes to make at my disposal, I will be able to eat healthy when I am in a rush. Also, the meals are inexpensive and is cheaper than buying a fast food meal.
